No matter your age, do you find yourself resisting, resenting or even dreading the process of getting older?
You’re not alone.
In our culture, we’ve been programmed to see aging as a problem to be managed rather than a gift to be celebrated. We hide signs that we’re aging, complain about our aches, or flat-out deny it’s happening.
The truth is that the journey of aging can be one of the most important catalysts for your spiritual development and ultimate freedom of your soul.
Aging can be a time of spiritual blossoming as you make peace with the ups and downs of life, let go of ego identifications and outdated agendas, and find your way home to your true Self.
But that’s not something you can simply visualize or snap your fingers to make happen. It requires you to consciously and deliberately shift your view of aging from a source of anxiety to a source of exciting possibilities and undreamed-of opportunities.
As you begin to take aging on as an awakening practice, you can actually become far more radiant, happy and fulfilled than you ever imagined possible — even WITH an aching hip, fading eyesight or receding hairline (or worse).
In many ways, each challenge that arises with aging can serve as a reminder to prioritize spirit over ego, let go of perceptions that no longer serve you, and express gratitude for all the many blessings in your life that you may be taking for granted. You will then discover that when you are determined to find blessings everywhere, blessings are just as determined to find you.
As you continue the soul work of letting go of the ephemeral and deepening your connection with the eternal, you recognize that change and growth are as enriching as they are inevitable, and you begin unearthing the gold in your golden years — nuggets of wisdom, beauty and awakening.
You begin to see life with fresh eyes and a deeper appreciation of how every day unfolds with beauty and purpose.
If you’re ready to view aging as one of the most significant opportunities for the liberation of your soul, there is no better teacher to learn from than Ram Dass, one of the world’s most beloved spiritual leaders.
Ram Dass became one of THE iconic pioneers of the sixties as a founding figure of the hippie movement and the author of the landmark book, Be Here Now, which continues to nourish seekers worldwide.
Over the years, his dedication to spiritual growth evolved into a focus on sacred service, and he became the revered elder for an entire generation.
Then, on a February day in 1997, at the age of 65, Ram Dass was blindsided by a debilitating stroke. From that day forward, he struggled with partial paralysis, aphasia and a host of physical challenges, including chronic pain and all manner of inconveniences.
He could have viewed this as a terrible — and terribly unfair — tragedy. He could have focused on what he had lost.
Instead, he considers the stroke an act of “fierce grace” that propelled him to a higher level of self-discovery and spiritual growth.
In the crucible of his physical ailments, he demonstrated that in the peace and beauty of unconditional surrender, suffering can become a gateway to transcendence and transformation.
Ram Dass now lives with an effervescent grace, radiance and beauty... even in a body that has been severely impaired. By aligning himself more with his spiritual essence than his body-bound ego, he’s become freer, more authentic, and, yes, more whole and complete.
Over the years, through his books, talks and teachings, Ram Dass ushered in a new era of understanding on subjects ranging from Eastern wisdom to higher consciousness to social change. And now, through the example of his own suffering, he’s inviting us to reframe the journey of aging as a literal practice of awakening.
In the 4-week Aging Into Awakening program, Ram Dass will light the way to transforming the heaviness that can come with the journey of aging, helping you to establish a baseline of expanded lightness of being and joy.
Ram Dass’ team has culled some of his most important teachings, videos and reflections for this program to ensure you’ll receive the essential teachings and practices you’ll need to make your own shift.
Ram Dass’ goal in offering this program is to help you flourish as you mature, and to shine with the illuminating light of your true essence.
These four sessions will provide many seeds of wisdom for you to harvest and plant in the garden of your own life — seeds that promise to blossom into peace, playfulness and joy as you navigate your own journey of growing older.
When you join us for this soul-expanding journey, you’ll not only have the chance to directly receive insights and blessings from this remarkable spiritual teacher, you’ll also have the chance to ask questions of some of his most cherished allies and soul friends, who will participate weekly in the live program and answer your questions based on their decades of experience with Ram Dass.
Over the course of the four weeks, you’ll:
Too often, aging is seen in a negative light in Western culture — with our worth, contribution and respect seemingly diminished with time.
It doesn’t have to be that way. If you’d like to discover how to embrace the gifts of aging and make your later years your “golden years” — the most spiritually meaningful time of your life — there is no wiser guide than Ram Dass.
You can make aging into a journey of liberation, laughter and lightness of being if, like Ram Dass, you embrace it as “fierce grace.”
Aging Into Awakening gives you the wisdom, the means, and the community of support to make the rest of your life the best of your life.
In three of the four sessions, Ram Dass’ teachings will be presented through pre-recorded video exclusively curated for Shift Network members, ensuring an even more powerful connection and transmission. This video connection will be easy to use and will greatly increase your learning and transformation.
Course sessions are on Tuesdays at 5:00pm Pacific.
In this 4-week intensive, Ram Dass and his beloved guests will guide you through the fundamental spiritual skills and competencies you’ll need to make friends with the changes that occur as you age and to transform the way you relate to death.
Each weekly contemplation and training session will build harmoniously upon the previous ones so you’ll develop a complete holistic understanding of the practices, tools and principles you’ll need to sustain your humor, honesty and connection to the reality of the aging process while building a community of interconnectedness with other like-minded individuals.
The course modules will consist of a one-hour broadcast of a video or audio teaching from Ram Dass directly followed by a 30-minute LIVE Q&A session hosted by a different guest faculty, who are all "dharma heirs" of Ram Dass.
Change is all around us; we are fascinated by it. But when it comes to aging — when change starts to happen to who we think we are — the fascination turns to fear. What’s more, our zeal for independence and individuality has separated us from the structures of family, community and nature that give meaning to aging. We are so heavily identified with our physical form that our resistance to aging becomes a burden on our soul. Is there a place to stand in relation to the changes of aging that is not rooted in fear?
In this module, you’ll explore:
Raghu Markus spent two years in India with Maharaj-ji and Ram Dass. He’s been involved in music and transformational media since the early 1970s when he was program director of CKGM-FM in Montreal. In 1974, he collaborated with Ram Dass on the box set, Love Serve Remember. In 1990, he launched Triloka Records and Karuna Music in Los Angeles, California. Triloka established itself as a critical leader in the development of world music, and for 17 years was home to artists such as Krishna Das, Hugh Masekela, Walela, Jai Uttal and transformational media projects featuring Ram Dass, Deepak Chopra and Les Nubians. He owns Yatra Media and lives with his wife in Asheville, North Carolina.
How can you shift from identifying with your ego to identifying with your soul? It’s only through identification with your soul that you can face aging and death without fear. If you’re identified with your ego, the combined self-image of your body and mind, then you’re destined to face the perils of aging in a constant state of suffering.
In this module, you’ll discover:
Mirabai Starr is author of Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation; new translations of the Spanish mystics, John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila; and the award-winning book, God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. She leads contemplative interspiritual retreats worldwide.
Pain and suffering are everywhere we look these days; it’s easy to start drowning in it. Is it possible to stay present in the midst of suffering and keep your heart open? How can we deal with the suffering caused by aging in a society that ignores the collective knowledge of our elders? The currency of the wisdom of age has been devalued by a youth-dominated culture.
In this module, you’ll contemplate how:
Rameshwar Das (James) Lytton met Ram Dass in 1967, soon after his return from India, and spent time with Maharaj-ji in India from 1970 to 1972. His principal vocation has been photography, working primarily on a freelance basis, including for the New York Times. He’s taught photography and photojournalism, and has also worked as an environmentalist and writer. Over the years, Ramesh has collaborated on several projects with Ram Dass, including the original collection of manuscripts that became Be Here Now and the Love Serve Remember box set of recordings. He is the co-author of Ram Dass’ newer books, Be Love Now and Polishing the Mirror. He lives with his wife and children on Long Island in New York.
How can our spiritual work best prepare us for death? Perhaps no one has more experience on this subject than Ram Dass, who has worked with countless dying people in a quest to demystify the subject of death. Ultimately, his experiences have taught us how to approach the mystery of death with a spaciousness that allows us to see it as part of the process of life, rather than simply the "the end."
In this module, you’ll explore how:
Mirabai Bush is co-author, with Ram Dass, of Compassion in Action: Setting Out on the Path of Service. She is a devotee of Maharaj-ji and spent time with him in India from 1971 to 1972. She is also Senior Fellow and founder of the Center on Contemplative Mind in Society, which encourages contemplative practice and perspective in American life in order to create a more just, compassionate and reflective society. Mirabai has also worked with Google on a workplace course called Search Inside Yourself and with the US Army on a program for chaplains and medics. She formerly directed the Seva Foundation Guatemala Project, which supports sustainable agriculture and integrated community development. She is editor of Contemplation Nation, co-author of Contemplative Practices in Higher Education, and author of the audio, Working With Mindfulness. She lives with her partner in Western Massachusetts.
In addition to Ram Dass’ transformative 4-week virtual course, you’ll receive two special bonuses from Ram Dass and one of his dharma heirs. These bonuses complement the course — and promise to take your understanding and practice to an even deeper level.
This popular 12-session program from one of Ram Dass’ dharma heirs will complement Ram Dass’ course as it supports you in learning the key principles and practices for turning the stages of grief (which can come with aging) into portals for spiritual awakening and transformation.
Working our way, step by step, through tragic losses can play a central role in our spiritual life, since grief tends to crack us open to the depths of life in a way that nothing else can.
Our heartache can turn into what St. Teresa of Avila called the “beautiful wound,” a kind of pain that actually connects us with the Divine. The wound, even while painful, can give rise, eventually, to the serenity, love and even joy that comes from feeling deeply connected with the source of all life.
Seen through a spiritual lens, grief is thus a profound opportunity for our evolution — both a deeper embodiment of life as well as a greater connection to spirit.
In this previously recorded program, each contemplation and teaching session will build harmoniously upon the next so that you’ll develop a complete, holistic understanding of the practices, tools and principles you’ll need to navigate the stages of grief in a way that opens you to real spiritual transformation.
You’ll journey through:
The original tuition for this course was $497.00, but is now yours FREE when you join Ram Dass’ program, Aging Into Awakening.
In this ebook, spiritual aspirants share their personal stories about the transformations they experienced through meeting Ram Dass. In the late sixties, when he first returned from India, Ram Dass began to share with American audiences his personal transformation from Richard Alpert to Ram Dass.
The men and women who started meeting each other on Ram Dass’ lecture tours began to share their stories with each other of how they met Ram Dass, and realized that there was a common theme or understanding — a connection through Ram Dass to unconditional love, to an honest direct awareness of the foibles of being human, and to having a sense of humor about it all.
The process of living the mystery is realizing that you and I exist on more than one plane of awareness simultaneously; on one plane suffering is a burden, and on another plane suffering is grace. The question is, can you balance those two things in your consciousness?
Ram Dass is one of our greatest teachers.
— Deepak Chopra, MD
A gift of love from the man who introduced me to the idea of higher consciousness and became one of my greatest teachers.

So many people are desperately searching for love, whether consciously or unconsciously. May Ram Dass’ intimate and heartfelt account inspire others to find their own path of true love, compassion and joyful service.
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Ram Dass planted seeds that turned into a million trees. If and when they blossom, they will exude the fragrance of his teachings forever.
— Marianne Williamson
Ram Dass has entered the often stormy relationship between our physical and spiritual sides, and he has lived to tell about it. Listen up, everybody, while Ram Dass tells it like it is.
— Larry Dossey, MD
There is no one better than Ram Dass to transmit the essence of “Eastern” religion and philosophy to Westerners. He has made the journey, and from the depth of his joy and wisdom he shares with us the journey of so many great beings.
— Krishna Das
It is not exaggerating to say that Ram Dass — formerly known as Harvard psychologist Dr. Richard Alpert — inspired multiple generations of spiritual seekers... He continues to do so through writing, teaching, and most importantly, by example.
— LA Yoga
[Ram Dass’] example of gentleness and loving compassion is infused with profound wisdom of the heart and mind, a welcome sense of humor, and a savvy effectiveness in the real world.

Ram Dass first went to India in 1967. He was still Dr. Richard Alpert, an already eminent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer with Dr. Timothy Leary. In India, he met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba (affectionately known as Maharaj-ji), who gave Ram Dass his name, which means "servant of God." In that moment, everything changed — his intense dharmic life started, and he became a pivotal influence on a culture that has reverberated with the words “Be Here Now” ever since.
Be Here Now, Ram Dass’ monumentally influential and seminal work, still stands as the highly readable centerpiece of Western articulation of Eastern philosophy, and how to live joyously 100 percent of the time in the present, whether it be luminous or mundane. Be Here Now continues to be the instruction manual of choice for generations of spiritual seekers. Forty years later, it’s still part of the timeless present.
Ram Dass now resides on Maui, where he shares satsang and kirtan, and where he can amplify the healing process in the air and waters of Hawaii. His work continues to serve as a path of wisdom and inspiration to countless seekers. Ram Dass’ spirit has been a guiding light for three generations, carrying along millions on the journey, helping free them from their bonds just as he worked his way through his own.
Q: What is a virtual course?

Other options include calling cards and discount long-distance carriers. You can also use Skype to connect to MaestroConference at no charge, and we offer a webcast which is free to use from anywhere in the world.
I have never participated before in an online course. The packaging, presentation, inclusion and Facebook postings created a wonderful, safe cocoon to participate. I haven’t seen a course so well put together ever — not in all the years of taking college classes — and I had my doubts about doing an online course. The wealth of organization and ease of learning materials and support made this fun as well.
– Claudia F., Medford, MA
Q: Can I get benefit from the course if I miss the live classes?
A: Absolutely! You can download the recordings and transcripts of all course sessions from our online media archive, so you never need to worry about missing live calls. You can also engage the full community and leaders on our private community website.
Q: Can you tell me about the Private Course Group?
